Brand Protection and Anti-Illicit Trade

Brand Protection Program

Brand Protection Program is our core expertise at Portcullis International. We provide confidential brand protection services to some of the market leaders in tobacco, spirits, automotive, media and electronics industries currently. Our consultants have substantial field experience in customs and border law enforcement, and over the years we have developed a solid intelligence network and strong working relationships with local law enforcement agencies.

In 2015, US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported that USD1.2 billion worth of counterfeit goods intended for sale in the United States were seized in 2014. The Counterfeiting Intelligence Bureau (CIB) from Commercial Crime Services (CCS) within International Chamber of Commerce also estimated counterfeiting accounts for between 5 to 7% of world trade, worth an estimated USD 600 billion a year. We understand the urgency to respond to the counterfeiting threats as Portcullis International has achieved solid credentials in formulating strategies to counteract against unauthorized products in the market and support client’s legal action against such illegal businesses.

Anti-Illicit Trade Program

Illicit trade is a growing phenomenon over the past few years. It is often the smuggling activities of generic and low-qualiity products that affect consumers, hurt legitimate market players and cause government to lose tax revenue. For example, an industry study revealed that in 2015 alone, 40% of the cigarettes sold in Malaysia was from illicit trade. Other fast moving consumer goods affected by illicit trade include but not limited to apparels, electronics, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals and tobacco. We provide industry-wide market strategies to suppress the level of illicit trade affecting a particular industry in its key markets across different countries. Our programs with various clients from diverse industries have led to seizures of illicit goods worth millions of dollars in various ASEAN countries and in Europe as well.
